Prof Joseph Mfutso-Bengo
Professor of Bioethics and a former Dean of School of Public Health and Family Medicine and chair of committee of deans. He is also the Director of Centre of Bioethics in Southern and Eastern Africa-(CEBESA) and he directs Centre of Excellence in Ethics and Governance (CEEG) and Health Economics and Policy Unit (HEPU).
He is a globally respected Bioethicist, ethical decision making & research Governance scholar, Educator and Scientist. He chairs Malawi National Advisory Committee on Bioethics (NACOB). Currently also serving as ethics advisor for European Union Vaccines Initiative called ADVANCE-VAC4PM. He is the ex-president of WHO-AFRO -Regional Global Summit of Nation Ethics Advisory Board and ex Chair of College of Medicine Research and Ethics Committee. He was the visiting faculties of John Hopkins Fogarty Bioethics Training Program for African Professionals and Michigan State University –Centre of Medical Ethics and humanities. He has served as a member Data Safety Monitoring Board for US NIH -NIAD for 5 years. He has served as consultant for both UNESCO and WHO. He served as ethics adviser to Senior Vice-President of GlaxoSmithKline (2007-2009).
He developed Ethics packages such as LEGS FRAMEWORK, Value-evidence based decision-making and Policy (VED-MAP), Medical Material Transfer Agreement & Moral Capital Index. He has developed moral capital self-assessment tool.
He has published widely in Bioethics, the ethical aspects of health systems and policy, health social sciences including Ubunthuology ethical principle. He is in top 5% i9n research, publication, citation and impact in the discipline of Ethics
